Homeless campfire sparks grass fire off Fillmore and Centennial

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Authorities say an unattended campfire in a well-known area for homeless sparked the fire off Fillmore and Centennial in Colorado Springs on Thursday morning.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived on the scene some time between 6:20 a.m. and 7 a.m. Crews from County Wildland, Hanover Fire, Black Forest Fire and Wescott Fire were called to assist.

CSFD also received help from Colorado Springs Utilities and Colorado Spring Police to notify neighbors of the impending danger with the winds changing.

A pre-evacuation order was issued at around 7 a.m. after the fire broke out at 6:20 a.m.

As of now, crews are still working on hot spots to make sure there are no embers that may escape from the containment lines.
